Stair Railing Repair Types in Tallahassee
Most railing calls are about one failed part. These are the four that come up most, each with its own fix.

Wobbly and Loose Handrails
A rail that moves when you lean on it has usually lost its grip at a bracket or at the newel. Wall brackets pull out of drywall that has no stud behind it, and in wood railings the screws themselves can corrode until the joint works loose. The repair is to re-anchor the bracket into framing or tighten the newel's base, then check that the rail sits at code height (see handrail rules).
- Cost: within the $250 to $1,000 railing repair range
- Strength after the fix: the rail has to take the same 200-lb load as a new one (load rule)

Loose or Broken Balusters
A single cracked or missing baluster is the most common small repair. The new one has to match the profile and be set back into the rail and tread so it can't twist out. A missing baluster also leaves a gap that almost certainly fails the spacing limit. Florida's existing-building code allows like materials for repairs, as long as the fix doesn't leave the railing less safe than before.
- One or two balusters: a repair-range job
- Most of the set loose or mismatched: price a full baluster replacement instead

Rusted Iron Railing Repair
Outdoor iron rusts first where water sits: at the foot of each post, at weld joints and where spindles meet the bottom rail. Surface rust can be wire-brushed, primed and repainted. A cracked weld or a spindle rusted through needs cutting and welding, which takes longer and sometimes costs more than a new spindle. Rusty parts weaken a railing, so don't leave a corroded post in service.
- Spindle repair: $100 to $500; complex welded work up to 8 hours
- Spindle replacement: $260 to $2,000
- Iron post, by fence-repair rates: $120 to $400 per post

Rotted Exterior Wood Railings
Outdoor wood in Tallahassee sits well inside the top band of the Forest Service's decay-hazard map. Rot starts at post bases, at the bottom rail and anywhere water sits in a joint. Sound posts can keep their rails while rotted pieces are cut out and replaced. A post that's soft at the base should come out, because the guard depends on it (guard rules).
- Decay hazard index: 93.6 for Tallahassee, against a top band that starts at 65 (USDA Forest Products Laboratory)
- Rainy days: about 113 a year with measurable rain, and no winter break for decay fungi

Stair Railing Repair Cost and When to Replace
Angi's stair repair guide puts labor at half or more of a typical bill, so two repairs with the same parts can differ widely in price. Demolition and prep add $100 to $400 when old parts have to come out first. For stairs as a whole, Angi suggests replacing rather than repairing once the repair would pass half the cost of replacement. That's a fair test for a railing too.
A like-for-like repair doesn't force the whole railing up to today's code, though the fixed part can't end up less safe (when old railings must comply). Minor repairs and replacement parts rarely need a permit; structural work can.
Before agreeing to a price, ask for:
- a written list of each part being fixed or replaced, with the count of balusters or posts
- whether rust or rot found after opening up the rail is priced in or quoted separately
