Handrails for Elderly Family Members: Types in Tallahassee
Aging-in-place railing work comes down to the places a person changes level: the inside stairs, the step at the door and, later, a ramp.

Second Handrails on Interior Stairs
Most houses have a rail on one side of the stairs, which is all the code requires. The CDC's Check for Safety checklist asks for rails on both sides, as long as the stairs, and for loose rails to be fixed or replaced. A second rail on the wall side lets a person lead with their stronger hand in both directions. It mounts on brackets and follows the same height and grip rules as the first rail (handrail rules).
- CDC checklist: rails on both sides, full length of the stairs
- Code minimum: one side, on flights with four or more risers
- Labor: most rail installs take 5 to 10 hours

Entry Step Grab Rails
One or two steps up to a front or garage door don't trigger the code's handrail rule, but they're still a place to lose balance while unlocking a door with full hands. A short grab rail fixed beside the door gives something solid to hold on the way up. The same visit can cover grab bars inside the house: the CDC checklist puts them next to and inside the tub and next to the toilet.
- Typical grab bar install: $200 to $350, about $300 on average
- Several at once: three bars in one visit run about $250 in labor
- Weak wall: reinforcing behind the bar adds about $200

Residential Ramp Handrails
A ramp replaces the steps once a walker or wheelchair is in the picture. The Florida residential code limits a ramp to the home's required exit door to a slope of 1 in 12, with an exception for tight sites. Any ramp steeper than 1 in 12 needs a handrail on at least one side. Landings at the top and bottom must be at least 36 inches wide. Public-building ramps follow stricter rules on the ADA handrails page.
- Rail height: 34 to 38 inches above the ramp surface, continuous for the full run
- Ramp cost: $1,700 to $5,000 installed; a permanent L-shaped concrete ramp with railings reaches about $8,000
- Materials per foot: aluminum about $150 to $200, wood $100 to $250 (materials only)

Why Tallahassee homeowners call Tallahassee Stair Railing
- Free for homeowners: the installer quotes you directly
- Your request goes to one railing installer, not a call list
- Ask for the rail height, baluster gap and material in writing
- Ask for a written quote before paying any deposit
Senior Handrail Costs and Timeline
| Job | Typical cost (national) | Time on site |
|---|---|---|
| Grab bar or short grab rail | $200 to $350 | ask when quoting |
| Second stair handrail | see handrail installation | 5 to 10 hours of labor |
| Modular aluminum ramp | about $3,000 for 10 feet | several hours for a prefab unit |
| Custom ramp | $1,000 to $6,000 | longer; depends on runs and turns |
The figures come from HomeAdvisor (grab bars, rail labor) and Fixr (ramps), and they are national ranges, not Tallahassee prices. Fixr notes that a long ramp with several runs and turns takes far longer to build than a prefab unit. If the existing rail is only loose, start with stair railing repair.
What to Ask For
- Rails that run the full length of the stairs on both sides, as the CDC checklist describes
- A round rail sized for a small or arthritic hand, within the code's grip range
- Ends returned to the wall, so a sleeve or walker strap can't catch
- What each bracket and grab bar screws into, and whether blocking or reinforcement is in the price
For a ramp
The slope, the landing sizes and which side gets the rail, all in writing
