Deck Railing Installation Types in Tallahassee
Deck rail is sold two ways: built on site from the same lumber as the deck, or bought as ready-made lengths and fastened between posts. Fixr's deck cost guide notes that this split is why prices vary so much within one material.

Pressure-Treated Pine Deck Railings
Pressure-treated pine is the usual rail on a wood deck: posts, a top rail and square balusters, built on site from the same lumber as the decking. It costs the least to put in and is easy to repair one piece at a time. It also needs the most upkeep. Decks.com budgets 8 to 12 hours, sometimes every year, to refinish a weathered wood deck, and the rail weathers with it.
- Installed cost: $30 to $50 per foot (Fixr), or $15 to $30 per foot (Decks.com)
- Refinish time: 8 to 12 hours for a wood deck, by Decks.com's estimate

Composite Deck Railings
Composite rail is made to match composite decking, so the rail and the boards look like one system. In Fixr's table it starts where wood tops out, at $80 a foot, but it doesn't need staining. Composite infill still counts as part of the guard, so it carries the same load rules as wood.
- Installed cost: $80 to $165 per foot (Fixr), or $40 to $80 per foot (Decks.com)
- Common pairing: composite decking boards

Aluminum Deck Railings
Aluminum suits a raised deck where you want thinner pickets and less upkeep. It is usually bought as ready-made lengths and fastened between posts rather than built on site. Aluminum resists rust, which matters on a deck with no roof over it. The aluminum stair railing page covers finishes and lifespan.
- Metal, installed: $45 to $85 per foot (Fixr), or $50 to $100 per foot (Decks.com)
- Replacing old rail: $50 to $250 per foot depending on material

Deck Stair Railings
The stair off a deck needs two things the flat deck edge doesn't. It needs a graspable handrail once the flight reaches four risers (handrail rules), and it needs a guard on any open side that drops more than 30 inches. A guard top can double as the handrail only if it meets the handrail height and grip limits. The stair guard follows the slope, so its balusters are cut at an angle and the spacing limit on stairs differs from the deck's (guard spacing).
- Handrail trigger: four or more risers
- Guard trigger: more than 30 inches above grade within 24 inches of the edge

Deck Railing Load Rules and Post Anchoring
Table R301.5 of the 2023 Florida Building Code, Residential, sets the strength every deck railing has to meet:
Guards and handrails
a 200-pound concentrated load, applied in any direction, at any point along the topBalusters and infill
50 pounds over a 1-square-foot area
Most deck rail failures start at the post, not the rail. Decks.com names inadequate blocking between the joists as a common cause of loose posts, and says the post needs support on all four sides. Tightening the bolts or adding blocking and structural screws can firm up a mild wobble in 1 to 4 hours. A good installer will push on each existing post before quoting and say which ones need new blocking.
Deck Railing Installation Cost and Timeline
These are national cost-guide figures, not Tallahassee prices. Fixr's overall range for deck railing is $30 to $210 per foot installed, from plain wood up to glass.
50 feet of new railing
2 to 4 days of work, by Decks.com's estimateRepairing existing rail
$25 to $100 per footReplacing existing rail
$50 to $250 per foot; glass and cable cost more to remove than wood
In the city, a 1- or 2-family deck more than 30 inches high needs a building permit (permits). Ask whether the quote includes the permit, removal of the old rail and the stair section, which is often priced apart from the flat runs.
