Modern Stair Railing Types in Tallahassee
Modern railings swap turned spindles for thin, straight lines: rods running parallel to the stair, vertical steel bars, or brushed posts. They look simple, but each style has its own spacing rules and hardware.

Horizontal Rod and Bar Railings
Solid rods do the job cable does with less upkeep, because they arrive straight and don't need the regular re-tensioning a cable run does. Rods are thicker than cable, 1/4 inch against 5/32, so the lines read a little bolder. The height of the guard sets the rod count, and the spacing has to keep every gap within the sphere rule.
- Spacing in one maker's system: rods at 3-1/8 inches on center
- Rod count: about 10 runs for a 36-inch guard, 11 for 39 inches, 12 for 42 inches
- Rod length: 4 to 20 feet, joined with couplers on longer runs

Flat-Bar Steel Railings
Flat bar gives the cleanest vertical look: thin steel strips set edge-on between a top and bottom rail, joined in a shop rather than on the stair. It's the same welded-steel trade as iron railings, so price follows that page's per-foot ranges for custom work. Because bars are welded at fixed spacing, the stair-side gap has to be right on the drawing, not fixed on site.
- Spacing: the gap between bars must stay under 4 inches on level guards and meet the stair-side limit
- Who builds it: a fabricator working from site measurements

Stainless Steel Post Railings
Stainless posts carry the infill, whether that's rod, cable or glass, and the post metal drives the price more than the infill does. In one manufacturer's pricing, the same rod railing costs about $50 to $60 more per foot on 2205 duplex stainless posts than on aluminum ones. The post spacing also matters: closer posts mean less give in the infill and a stiffer handrail.
- Rod railing on aluminum posts: $115 to $185 per foot
- On 304 stainless posts: $135 to $210 per foot
- On 2205 stainless posts: $165 to $245 per foot
- Post spacing: no more than 4 feet on center in that system

Wood and Metal Combination Railings
A wood handrail over black steel posts warms up a metal railing and gives the hand something softer to hold. The wood cap is often the grip rail, so its profile has to meet the handrail grip rules. One manufacturer's own example, a wood handrail over rod infill on a stair with a 15-foot level run, came to $7,000 to $9,000 before shipping and tax.
- Example size: 15 linear feet plus 19 steps
- Ask for: the wood species and finish, and whether the cap is the code handrail or a separate rail is added

Why Tallahassee homeowners call Tallahassee Stair Railing
- Free for homeowners: the installer quotes you directly
- Your request goes to one railing installer, not a call list
- Ask for the rail height, baluster gap and material in writing
- Ask for a written quote before paying any deposit
Modern Stair Railing Cost and Timeline
National cost guides put stainless railing at about $25 to $110 a foot, while factory rod systems start well above that. The difference is what's included: a factory system price covers posts, handrail, infill and hardware, built to a set of measurements.
The calendar is mostly waiting on parts. One railing manufacturer quotes 10 to 15 days of production on average, without transit, and doesn't guarantee it. Once parts arrive, a straight stair often finishes in 1 to 5 days, and longer level runs or several turns add time. Treat those as one maker's figures, not a market average; a local shop's schedule comes with its quote.

What to Ask Before Ordering a Modern Railing
Climbing
Horizontal guards were once barred by the 2000 model residential code because children can climb them. Later editions dropped the ban, but some local codes kept it. If small children use the stair, ask about vertical infill instead.Post metal
Ask which grade the quote assumes: aluminum, 304 or 2205 stainless. It changes the price by more than the infill choice does.Mounting
Ask whether posts mount on top of the treads, on the side of the stringer or into concrete, and how each anchor reaches solid framing (load rule).Permit
A railing replacement can cross the city's permit threshold; ask whether yours does (permits).
